Loutraki has always run a little hot.

It's Greece's oldest spa town — thermal springs the Greeks were soaking in long before wellness was a marketing term — and once nicknamed the Monte Carlo of Greece, thanks to a casino that turned it into a retro playground for well-off Athenians starting in the 1930s.

How it exists now is a strange and wonderful mix of mosaic-tiled bathhouses next to faded mid-century hotels.

PACK YOUR BAGS

In its heyday, visitors arrived by steamer from Piraeus, dressed for an evening they'd planned for weeks. It was the kind of place people got dressed up to disappear into for a while — cocktails on a terrace overlooking the water, an orchestra playing until someone insisted on a drunken waltz.

The season's latest swimwear follows suit, offering one and two piece uniforms of old-world gumption. From underwire bikini tops fit for old schooners, to high-waisted hipsters made for climbing down to some hidden cove.

A color story for every mood of the coastline

Lagoon, dotted like the mosaic saints watching over the bathhouse. Viola, borrowed from a hotel lobby that hasn't redecorated since 1965. Black, for the water once it's gone from turquoise to ink. Scarlet, for the red lip that makes an appearance every night at dinner.
